Gesture, a motion of the limbs or body to express a thought or to emphasize a speech plays an important role in human life. Humans make use of this gesture along with speech for conveying a thought effectively. We even use it instead of speech to silently communicate. But incorrect gestures are always misleading.
It is observed that even while we talk on phone, unknowingly we gesture using our hand, don't we?
Also in 1998, researchers at University of Indiana confirmed that blind people too make use of gestures even though they haven't seen anyone doing it.
But why do we gesture all time?
Researcher Andrew Bass of Cornell university with his team has found in fish brains a link between sound and gesture. Few fishes vibrate their pectoral fins creating sound to communicate, while others vibrate a swim bladder muscle to do so. The part of the fish brain, the hindbrain controlling pectoral muscles also controls the muscles essential for producing sound. By this Andrew depicts that even humans automatically start gesturing without their knowledge since even human brain processes speech and sign language in same area. Therefore when we start speaking gesture follows it.
These gestures are now so popular that they can be used for interaction with electronic gadgets.
