ZTE & ALCATEL RELEASE SMARTPHONES WITH FIREFOX OS:
Mozilla's Linux based- Firefox OS for smartphones and tablets is designed in such a way using JavaScript and open web API's to permit HTML 5 applications to communicate directly with the device hardware.
ZTE Corporation(Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation) at CES 2013 had promised to ship smartphone with open source Firefox OS, now has finally released its first Firefox OS smartphone ZTE Open, in Spain, on July 2, 2013 for just 69 Euros. This will be available in Poland soon in the coming months. The reason ZTE chose Spain is due to Spain's economic woes with around 27% unemployed and has highest penetration of smartphones.
Alcatel One Touch Fire is another smartphone featuring open source Firefox OS. Both the phones sport slim design and come with all normal smartphone features and apps. The Firefox Marketplace provides access to many apps, but there aren't many for now. These phones have 3.5" TFT Capacitive touchscreens, not HD and have only 512 MB internal memory with expandanble Micro SD memory feature. Both use Adreno 200 graphics card and 1 GHz Qualcomm processor. Alcatel has 3.2MP camera while ZTE Open has 3.15 MP camera. But the low price which includes 30 Euros of credit for prepaid users looks to make up for lack of specs.
But due to lack of specs these are likely to fail to gain demand. However this low impact start seems like its way too far from gaining popularity like Android OS unless it comes out with smartphones possessing amazing features. Hope to see soon some devices with Firefox OS and sporting amazing features.
