Want a SIM Card ?-- Fingerprint would be needed to get your SIM activated.
SIM Card -- an essential for every mobile phone to gain access to different services. It has been a helping hand by providing a way to talk to any person having a contact number and even message by maintaining minimum balance required for such services to be used. But its use for illegal purposes for money laundering, threatening calls, ransom etc., are rising day by day and there is a need to stop the SIM cards from falling in wrong hands. But with fake document submission this cannot be avoided and this had even costed India when terrorists used the Indian SIM cards for Mumbai attack on 26/11.Even DoT's mandatory rule to personally verify the documents before issuing the SIM too failed. Many polices caught unauthorized retailers as well as raised the issue several times. The competition among service providers to sell as many SIM as possible to be on lead is also a reason behind the acception of forged documents. Strict actions are therefore necessary
On May 15, the Delhi Police Commissioner too raised the issue and wrote about it to the home ministry. In India, the Aadhar card is being made a must to have by every individuals as it helps in retaining one's identity and could be used for various benefits. This Aadhar card would contain biometric information.
The Indian govt. with this tool can catch hold of any individual misusing the SIM card if the service providers have their fingerprints with them. So the home minister has asked department of telecommunication (DoT) to look forward to make it compulsory for service providers to take customer's fingerprint before activating the number and maintain a central database containing biometric information of all subscribers and maintain under NATGRID(National Intelligence Grid) since it would comprise information of all subscribers important for nation's security.
Soon the decision as what to be done since existing user's have not submitted their biometric data to telecom service providers after a detailed discussion to take place as early as possible. Hope the government comes out with the implementation of this rule to stop this illegal use of SIM card imposing it even on the present subscribers.
