Kiromo - The first robot astronaut developed by Japan

First Robot Astronaut developed by Japan is all set to go to space:

Japan is all set to launch its first talking robot astronaut Kirobo to international Space Station which is to accompany Kouichi Wakata, the first Japanese commander of the International Space Station. The launch is scheduled on August 4 using the Kounotori 4 cargo spacecraft from Tanegashima Space Centre.

This cute little robot was built jointly by Dentsu, the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science & Technology, Robo Garage, Toyota, and JAXA( Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) with the ability to speak Japanese with the humans as well as navigate in zero gravity. It is electronically equipped with the necessary sensors and devices and weighs only one kilogram. Only the robot will be launched to ISS in August in an unmanned rocket whereas the commander Kouichi Wakata will be travelling to ISS in September. Similar robot named Mirata will be used as a backup crew member. The Kirobo and Mirata are equipped with facial recognition and recording system to help acquire information through images and provide necessary help to astronaut and even record the required events. Their voice recognition system help them understand the human language whereas natural language processing and voice composite system is provided so that they can communicate back to humans in Japanese.

The Japanese Module of ISS is said to be named as 'Kibo' that means hope. This being the first ever attempt to study the interaction of robot and the human in space, the outcome would decide whether robots are to assist humans in future space missions.
