PowerTrekk - A portable charger

                                   

      Several years have passed all-through which many had thought of different ideas to get a portable charger to get the small gadgets conveniently charged. These ideas have led to invention of chargers like pre-charged charger which used the bulk batteries to store the charge and then use it for charging the devices while on a journey and we even witnessed charges which used solar energy to generate electricity for charging the device. These had their own limitations like solar based would need the sunlight and pre-charged one's couldn't be used for many days since frequent use would drain out and user had to make sure that they charge before they are leaving on for a long journey.

This unique charger has been built by myFC, a world leader in micro fuel cells, founded in 2005 by researchers at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology whose goal is to provide high performance, environmental friendly, portable and affordable power and energy solutions. The special feature is that it uses the ordinary water to charge the gadgets like mobile phones, cameras, GPS devices etc. Built with main intention of solving the problem of mobile phones running out of power when there is no access to electricity grid especially for frequent travelers, is called as a 2-in-1 solution since it is both a fuel cell and a portable battery pack. It allows the devices to be charged via USB.

                The principle used by this charger for the production of electricity is said to be that, the electricity can be generated by separating the hydrogen from water using a chemical reaction which then reacts with oxygen releasing energy utilized to produce electricity. In this charger when the ordinary water is poured the fuel cell that is called as 'puck' containing sodium silicide since Hydrogen in its pure gaseous form is dangerous, uses the same principle , converting hydrogen into electricity via its proton exchange Membrane. Here the released hydrogen reacts with oxygen in air giving out water and electricity. The output voltage is 5V.It's internal buffer charges the lithium-polymer-battery pack is rated to carry around 1500mAh, 3.7V, 5.6Wh. The PowerTrekk promises to provides power instantly the water is poured into it and its bi-product is said to be only a little water vapor. According to the  company, it needs continuous exposure to open air for efficient generation of electricity and the even warns against using it in a pocket or backpack. The use of the portable lithium-polymer battery pack is to act as a ready power source or as the charge storing equipment from fuel cell since the chemical reaction cannot be stopped once started.

                It's disadvantage is that the puck gets depleted soon after few full charging of the gadget's battery. But still it's a best gadget for travelers who are in need of such a charger to help them have a tension free journey since it needs only water and an open air for the charging to be done.
